What is Reach on Social Media?

Reach measures unique accounts or people exposed to content within a stated period, according to the platform's definition. It may be estimated. Repeated exposure adds impressions, but does not add a new account to reach within the same report.

Reach vs impressions

In a simplified example, 1,000 accounts each see the same post twice. That is 1,000 accounts reached and 2,000 impressions. Reach counts each account once within that report; impressions include repeat displays. Neither figure tells you how carefully anyone read the post.

Keep the platform's label. Accounts, people and estimated unique viewers are not interchangeable units. For example, YouTube estimates unique viewers across devices and signed-in or signed-out viewing. Its unique-viewer metric is different from thumbnail impressions.

Why you cannot add post reach

Fictional weekly reportAccounts reached
Post A1,000
Post B800
Accounts that saw both posts300
Unique audience across the two posts1,500

The combined audience is 1,000 + 800 − 300 = 1,500, not 1,800. If you do not know the overlap, those two post counts cannot tell you the unique total. Use the platform's account-level reach for the whole period, where available.

What does reach rate mean?

Formula
Reach relative to followers = reach ÷ followers × 100

A post reaching 1,500 accounts from a profile with 1,000 followers has a ratio of 150%. That is possible because non-followers can see it. It does not mean every follower saw the post. To measure follower coverage, you need follower reach specifically and a compatible follower count.

Record when the follower count was measured. If the count is zero or missing, leave the rate unavailable rather than treating it as zero. Keep the raw reach figure visible even when you use a percentage.

Use reach to guide the next post

  • Compare the same platform, format and reporting window. Separate promoted content from organic distribution where the report allows it.
  • Use follower and non-follower breakdowns, when available, to understand who you reached. Total reach alone does not show that split.
  • Pair reach with useful responses, link traffic or enquiries. More exposure is not evidence of more sales.
  • Read estimated or unavailable fields as such. Do not substitute zero for a metric the platform did not provide.

Reach FAQ

What is the difference between reach and impressions?

Reach counts unique accounts or people within the report's scope. Impressions count recorded displays, including repeats. Match the content, date range and measurement rules before comparing them.

Can reach exceed follower count?

Yes. Non-followers may see content through recommendations, search, sharing or paid distribution. Total reach does not tell you what percentage of your existing followers saw a post.

Can I add reach across posts or platforms?

You can sum the reported counts, but that sum is not a unique audience. The same account or person can appear in several reports. Use a deduplicated total when the reporting source provides one.
