What is a Social Media Bio?

A social media bio is the short text on your profile that tells visitors who you are, what you offer and what to do next. It sits under your name and profile photo and is kept short: 150 characters on Instagram, 80 on TikTok and 160 on X.

Why your bio matters

Your bio is read at the moment someone decides whether to follow you, message you or leave. Visitors arrive from a Reel, a search or a shared post with no context, and the bio has a few seconds to answer three questions: who is this, what's in it for me, and what should I do next? On most networks the bio also feeds in-app search, so the words you choose help the right people find you.

What to include

  • Who you help and how: one line of value, such as “Gluten-free cakes delivered across Leeds”.
  • Proof or personality: an award, a specialty or a tone of voice that fits your brand.
  • A call to action: “Order below”, “New recipes every Tuesday”, “DM us to book”.
  • A link: your site, or a link-in-bio page when you have several destinations.
  • Searchable keywords: on Instagram the name field is searchable, so put your main keyword there as well as in the bio text.

How to tell if your bio works

Compare profile visits with new follows and with link taps in your insights. If plenty of people visit but few follow or tap, the bio isn't convincing them. Change one thing at a time (the first line, the call to action or the link) and compare the next few weeks.

A worked example

Before: “Coffee lover ☕ | Living my best life | Est. 2019”. After: “Specialty coffee roasted in Bristol. Fresh beans shipped UK-wide in 48 hours. 10% off your first bag below.” The second version says what the business does, where, the benefit and the next step, and it contains words people actually search for.

Common mistakes

  • Clever but vague lines that never say what you do.
  • No call to action, or a link to a generic homepage.
  • Letting the bio go stale after a launch, sale or rebrand.
  • Stuffing hashtags and keywords until it reads like spam.

Bio FAQ

What should I write in my social media bio?

Say who you help and how, add one detail that builds trust or shows personality, and finish with a clear next step that points to your link. Use the words your audience would search for.

Should I use emojis in my bio?

A few can add structure and personality, for example as bullet points. Don't let them replace words: screen readers read each emoji aloud, and search can't match an emoji to what you do.

How often should I update my bio?

Whenever your offer changes, and at least once a quarter. Update the call to action and link for launches, seasonal sales or a new content series, then change them back when they end.
